There's a road out
If you find yourself stuck - with few
and only ephemeral pleasures; with
minimal gratifications; and without meaning -
there's a road out.
(it has) three pillars
positive emotion - positive institutions - positive traits.
Positive emotions serve us best
when life is easy.
Experiences that induce positive emotion
cause negative emotion
to dissipate rapidly.
In times of trouble positive institutions
(family, democracy, free press)
are of immediate importance.
In times of trouble
understanding and building strengths
and virtues (traits)
become more urgent
than in good times.
Strengths and virtues
function to buffer against
misfortune and disorders.
They may be the key to building resilience.
there's a road out
(it) takes you through
the countryside of pleasure
and gratification,
up into the high country
of strength and virtue
And finally to the peaks
of lasting fulfilment,
meaning and purpose.
