The baby tiger

He felt adrift, and devoid of
all values. Overweight and exhausted,
with an uncontrollable facial tic.
Reaching out was an act of
atonement. The counsellor
likened his addiction to
keeping a baby tiger.
At the beginning it’s exciting
but as you feed the tiger it grows
and the threat becomes
increasingly risky.
At the core of all addiction
is a discrepancy between
values and actions.
Working to explore the discrepancy
has opened a path towards
insight and healing.
He is rediscovering the pure joy of living,
understanding the difference between
false, fabricated pleasure and
real genuine pleasure.
He seems rejuvenated
and somehow younger than when
he was feeding the baby tiger.
