Merry Everything
What is this wonderful gift
with which I present you today?
Why, of course, it is nothing.
It’s the idea of something. It’s a good wish:
–Good vibes
–Good thoughts
–Prayers.
It’s the wish
that if everything feels like a disaster right now,
something feels like hope really soon.
It’s a letter in the post
from someone you love.
It’s sitting somewhere
watching the sunset.
It’s remembering something funny
someone once said to you.
It’s the feeling after exercise.
It’s the kind of self-confidence
that doesn’t depend on belittling someone else.
It’s contented silence. It’s a sleep-in. It’s lying on the floor
It’s wearing something
that someone gave you.
It’s a blank page in a new notebook.
So, Merry Everything. And remember…
Merry sitting-in-the-corner-feeling-vaguely-miserable is fine, too.
Lorin Clarke’s Public Service Announcements tucked all the way at the back of The Big Issue are often a source of inspiration (and direct quotation) for my found and patchwork pieces. I am in her debt and at times in awe of her thoughts and writing craft.
This is the third year I’ve offered you something-a-little-different at this time of year!
Here’s a reminder of years gone by:
